NOTES FROM THE SCRIBE:
Oh, where to start? Vernie Welch did a very nice invocation and Suzanne Popp handled the visiting Rotarians. Then it went sideways, fortunately, the wife of Rob Taylor, our newest member, pulled Steve Duermeyer’s chestnuts out of the fire and helped him sing some crazy song he made up to the tune of “Home on the Range.” You had to be there. Well, maybe not.
Rotary Notes of Interest & Announcements
- Rotary bought $581 worth of tomatoes from Debby Syverson and the San Pasqual Academy. Either that or we donated $581 to SPA and they donated fresh tomatoes to us. See Suzanne Popp for throwing lessons.
- We also donated $500 to the Coronado Community Band and in exchange Langdon Smith invited us to their next free concert at the Spreckel’s Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park on August 5 at 6:15 p.m.
- Coronado Rotary had a chance to thank Erin Fitzgerald. Who is Erin Fitzgerald and what did she do to enjoy our gratitude? She and Doug Weisbarth picked up ALL 180 American flags on the evening of July 4 th! Which means she picked up while Doug drove! Thank you Erin!
- Today was $10 Rotary shirt day courtesy of Dick Vilmure. At least seventy-five new shirts were sold, but the deal is you HAVE to WEAR them around town.
- If you’re interested in leadership within Rotary Steve Haley has the District 5340 Leadership Schedule.
- President Tim recognized Mary Griffin for her work with Missionvale, the Low Tide Ride & Stride, the Golf Tournament, Relay for Life, beach clean-up, Flags on the Avenue, and as a Board member. She does all this and she’s only been in our club for a little over a year!
- Gerry Easton inducted our newest member Rob Taylor. Rob’s sponsor is Walt Heinecke and Rob’s wife is an excellent singer and bailed Steve Duermeyer out of a potential musical disaster.
News From Past Meetings
- Rotary Board meetings have been moved to the THIRD Tuesday of each month. Same time, same place (the world headquarters of the Gensler Group at 4:30 p.m.).
- Rotary Day at the Races will be August 21. It’s a Saturday so see Bill Sandke if you want to attend. Bonus! Bob Kipperman and Megan “The Megan” Richmond will be social directors, so hang on to your hats!
- Coronado Rotary joins the 21 st century! Gloria LeBlanc has set up a Coronado Rotary Facebook page. Facebook is a social network so you can use it for all sorts of things and if you’re in doubt, ask Gloria.
- Mark your calendars for this year’s Relay for Life. It will be at Glorietta Bay Park on July 31 and August 1. Mary and Bob Griffin are encouraging every Rotarian to participate in some way; walking, buying a luminary, or just coming out to support the event.
- Ginger Cox and Jane Simeral are hosting a Bead for Life Party in Jim Kaufman’s garden Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Let your wives and sweethearts know to RSVP, and if you’re a male and thinking of going, turn in your Man Card.
- Suzanne Popp’s daughter Natalie is the president of the CHS Interact Club and reported on their upcoming projects. If you have used cell phones and/or used batteries see Suzanne about helping Interact.
- The Rotary International Youth Symphony is in town and practicing for their big concert on July 31 at Shiley Center on USD. The evening starts at 5:30 p.m. with the concert starting about 7:00 p.m. Steve Duermeyer is the point of contact and has all the information.
- Want to go to South Africa in December? Dan Gensler is putting together a trip to coincide with the arrival of all the shoes that are being donated.
The Family of Rotary
Please contact Lew Barnum at 435-8096 or 316-9875 or lewb3@sbcglobal.net for updates and information.
Joe Rizza had a little fall at home, but he’s doing fine, and we were joined by Charles Hayes today. Welcome back Charles.
FINES & RECOGNITIONS
- Who was that man behind the Foster Grant’s? Lew Barnum was doing his best Stevie Wonder impersonation.
- Rotarians with birthdays apparently know to be scarce when President Tim is around. Guy Zeller didn’t get the memo, but he did get a $73 fine. (ages remain anonymous)
- When is this nightmare going to end? Somehow, President Tim came up with a picture of The Scribe, appropriately attired, but sentenced to a very humbling mode of transportation.

PROGRAM
For your three graduate units in tax planning see Tami Sandke. Tami was kind enough to step in and take the program that our late friend Jeff Loeffler was scheduled to give. Tami’s expertise is NOT “Wings over Africa,” but IS in estate planning. The Scribe only has an SC education so he’s not sure he got all of it, but it seems that the Bush Tax Cuts of 2001 were purchased in a Faustian Bargain with the Democrats and some really crazy stuff was written into the tax cut legislation in order to perpetuate the accounting fiction that the tax cuts “paid for themselves.” Only in the Washington D.C. world of “static revenue” scoring would this make any sense and now we have a situation where if you have any money and want to pass it on to your heirs mostly intact, you have five months to die! Seriously, NOBODY knows what’s going on as there are many competing and conflicting “fixes” to the “problem.” Take some Rotary advice: If you’re worried about this stuff contact fellow Rotarians Tami Sandke, Ted Considine, Charles Hayes, or David Anderson. Or, plan on living long enough to see sanity restored to D.C.
