NOTES FROM THE SCRIB
E:

“We’re Back in the Saddle Again!” For our 84 th year, and our 80 th year at the Hotel Del, and for another song that NO ONE knows! But, the good news is that the Scribe is back on a bike, not “the” bike; but, hey, it’s progress. For the 71 st anniversary of the start of WWII, President Tim asked Al Ovrom to give a nice invocation honoring all who served, or have served, our great nation. Our favorite Canadian, Mark Thompson, introduced the many visiting Rotarians and the aforementioned “song” was led by Bob Schoultz. Bill Bowden, our regular guest from Oklahoma City, is saying goodbye for another year and President Tim gave him some lovely parting gifts. In return, Bill made a nice donation to our Club in honor of his birthday. We can’t divulge the age, but the donation was for $78. Finally, after two months at this you’d think President Tim would remember to introduce our guests!

Rotary Notes of Interest & Announcements

  • Paul Plumb is in heaven. The new Club by-laws were approved by voice vote today.
  • Chip Garry is in the house and looking good. Welcome back Chipper!
  • Jeff Tyler and the Lamb's Players are putting together another cultural opportunity to benefit San Pasqual Academy. They're setting aside great seats to "Smoke on the Mountain" here in Coronado on Sept. 10th. Tickets are $38. Contact Jeff if you are interested.
  • We’re not sure what Gloria LeBlanc was trying to say, but with the Dick Vilmure subsidy almost two hundred of the “walking billboards” have been sold, including the five Lionel Rowe bought to take to the swap meet. We hope he made lots of money as President Tim has promised to fine him every meeting he doesn’t wear a Rotary shirt.
  • Grudge Match! The gutty little Optimists have challenged the Mighty Rotary Club to a game of lawn bowling. With Bill Hiscock as our leader, we can’t lose! President Tim will show up tomorrow morning at the Optimist’s meeting to accept the challenge and have a cheese Danish.
  • Flags on the Avenue twice next week. Labor Day on September 6 and then again on September 11. Be there! You don’t want Doug Weisbarth to hunt you down!
  • Ivan Dunn presented Sharon Lawrence with Rotary’s donation to Voices for Children. VFC is a volunteer organization that advocates for the rights and well-being of San Diego’s abused children in the courtroom, in school, and in the community.

News From Past Meetings

  • Rotary Board meetings have been moved to the THIRD Tuesday of each month. Same time, same place (the world headquarters of the Gensler Group at 4:30 p.m.).
  • Coronado Rotary joins the 21 st century! Gloria LeBlanc has set up a Coronado Rotary Facebook page. Facebook is a social network so you can use it for all sorts of things and if you’re in doubt, ask Gloria.
  • It’s all male Rotarians favorite time of year; prostate screening! Harriett Sangrey announced the date as September 25 at 8:30 a.m. If you’d like to help, they could use a hand.
  • September 8 will be Coronado Rotary Night at the Padres. It’s against the Dodgers, that’s the good news.
  • Calling all skiers! The annual IFSR (International Fellowship of Skiing Rotarians) trip will be to Aspen the week of January 31 to February 6. If you like skiing see Steve Duermeyer to get in on the fun.
  • Save the date! October 8 th Susie Owen and Rotary are planning an evening of wine and conversation at Al and Susie Ovrom’s home to raise funds for Polio Plus.

FINES & RECOGNITIONS

  • Democracy in action! Steve Kasbeer is celebrating ten years in Coronado Rotary. You would assume a $10 recognition, but President Tim consulted the rabble and the rabble voted themselves $100 from Steve. Tax the rich!
  • Dale St. Denis recognized his first year in Rotary. This time. He resigned in 1988, so $88 was the fine.
  • The U-T got Mike Copp’s football playing son’s name wrong (Copp, Capp, Popp, Bailey, etc?). But, assuming they were talking about the right kid, its sounds like Mike has raised quite a playah. $50. But wait, there’s more! He plays both ways: $100!

PROGRAM

Kris Grant introduced our own Jeff Felix who just happens to be the superintendent of the Coronado Unified School District. (Remember, fines are doubled if you scoot on a fellow Rotarian!) Dr. Felix claims some fame as a proponent of “Blogging as an educational tool.” The mind reels! So, here’s the deal: First, as citizens of Coronado we should know that our children are safe and getting a GREAT education. This cannot be emphasized too much! They are SAFE and getting a GREAT education. But, the fiscal situation is dire. Think of Jeff and the school board as the captain and crew of the Titanic. All they get to do is rearrange the deck chairs! They have no, zip, zero, nada control over the sources of funding, all they can do is spend what they get from the State of California.

There are 3000 students in the district and the district now receives $2500 less per student then they did a couple of years ago. You do the math. The good news is that the district leadership has been pro-active so the ship of state will sink more slowly than others, but it’s sinking just the same. This year will see five less school days, larger class size, the employees took a 4% decrease via furloughs, and there will be a limit to the curriculum supplies they can buy. And, just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse the ACLU has decided that student activity fees run afoul of something in the Ed Code.

In a perfect world CUSD would operate with no, or fewer, state mandates and a whole lot more control of the sources and uses of the education funding. Rest assured that they are making sure that they are meeting the needs of the 21 st Century Student mainly through technology and application of new teaching techniques utilizing that technology.

The District’s website is www.coronadousd.net and they are striving for transparency, so you can logon and see how much we’re overpaying El Jefe! (Just kidding Jeff)
