Rotary International Convention in Los Angeles |

NOTES FROM THE SCRIBE:
In an inverse universe, Rotary is perfect! Let’s see, we got next year’s president and next week’s program, TODAY! President-elect Al Ovrom called on the Squire, Walt Heinecke, to do double duty and give the invocation and do his best Lionel Rowe imitation introducing our visiting Rotarians. To relieve potential boredom we DID get the slide show of Rotary events we DIDN’T get two weeks ago. Like I said, “In an inverse universe…”
ROTARY NOTES OF INTEREST AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
- The Rotary International Convention is in Los Angeles next year. It’s a great opportunity for local Rotarians to see Rotary International up close and personal. Go to www.rotary.org if you want to secure a hotel room anywhere near the Convention Center, the hotels are filling up fast!
- Rotary Night at the Opera will be April 18. The tickets look like they’ll be $97 and $76 and another $10 for the pre-opera tailgate party. Ross White is the impresario again. But, he needs to have your RSVP kind of quickly as he’s a little behind in his planning.
- See the District website for information on District 5340’s District Conference which will be held April 18-20 at the Hotel Corral in Ensenada. www.rotary5340.org
- $75 non-Rotarian announcement: The Coronado Hospital Foundation membership drive is on. Our hospital needs your support. See Greg Walker as he “paid” for the public service announcement.
- Earl Pool gave the Red Badge Report: The good news, we only have twenty in the pipeline, down from about forty. The bad news: six of those are from 2006! Sponsors take your new members under you wing and get them to full status.
- President-elect Al gave our $500 donation to Coronado Youth Softball.
- Mr. Ann Thomas (Bob Plumb) reminded everyone that the Jim Laslavic Rotary Charity Golf Tournament sponsored by EDCO is April 4 and all we need are 36 Rotarians with three friends each and we can quit working and start playing. Dan Orr is the contact for volunteering the day of the tournament.
- Gerry Easton inducted our newest member, Chuck Howe. Chuck has been in the pipeline for awhile, but was patiently awaiting the return of his sponsor, Jerry Winter, from his duty Down Under. Welcome aboard, Chuck!
The Family of Rotary
Larry Wade is in the Villa Royale and could use some cheering up, and our server, Judy Cash, had foot surgery and will be on injured reserve for a couple of months.
Please contact Mary Sternad at 522-9452 or psternad@aol.com for updates and information.
FINES & RECOGNITIONS
- It’s going to be a long 2008-2009. President-elect Al proved he could read the birthday list and February is a target rich environment.
- Lew Barnum turned 71 today and donated $100 to the Coronado Rotary Endowment.
- Tom Mitchell qualified for Medicare (you do the math) and is saving so much money he can afford the $75.
- Mark Ochenduszko wasn’t even here and he got fined for his birthday AND club anniversary in the same week.
- February 15 th is a good day for birthdays as the youngest 66-year old, the oldest 59-year old, and the prettiest dentist in Rotary all celebrate the Big Day. That would be Glenn Welch, Dan Orr, and Suzanne Popp. Where’s Jimbo Rowe when you really need him?
- Grandpa Bob Watson was fined again, in abstentia, for what had to be the longest labor in history. I swear he was fined last week for the delivery of his new granddaughter. We can confirm that Bob is a grandfather as of TODAY.
- President-elect Al can also read the Club anniversary list and there was hell-to-pay on that front as well. Ed Lohlein was called on in short-order and immediately ratted out President Scott on his eleventh Club anniversary and President-elect Al got a head start on next year and fined our missing president. All on the advice of Ed.
- Mickey Bourke’s been in eleven years and volunteered $100 to the Coronado Rotary Endowment. Dave Johnson celebrates eight years in Rotary and seven months selling lunch tickets and for that $75 was extracted.
- President-elect Al can also read the newspaper. Mary Sternad, and anonymous Rotarians, got their pictures in the Eagle, but poorer Mary had to pay $75. The Historical Society can’t get enough publicity, so every time Joe Ditler drives the laundry truck around he gets his picture in the paper and Rotary gets another $75.
- And, finally, because Steve Duermeyer spent his birthday in New Zealand, President-elect Al fined him $37.50 for having his picture on the cover of the Coronado Lifestyle magazine. Huh? This is the second or third time Steve’s been fined for that picture and at the rate he’s going his fines could have purchased the Harley upon which he was photographed. As we noted, President-electAl is a work in progress.
PROGRAM
Mrs. Bob Plumb (Dr. Ann Thomas) was introduced by Suzanne Popp for a light discussion of the United States’ efforts to help sub-Saharan Africa deal with their enormous problem of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in public health and male circumcision and besides being an adjunct professor at SDSU she is on the President’s team for dealing with HIV/AIDS worldwide, especially in Swaziland. Where to start on the numbers? There are 33 million people in the world with HIV/AIDS and 26 million of them are in sub-Saharan Africa. Of the 2 million annual deaths, 1.6 million are in; you guessed it, sub-Saharan Africa. In 2003 President Bush committed $15 billion to be spent over five years and is now requesting another $30 billion for the next five years. Dr. Thomas is responsible for making sure this money all gets to the right spot and not for Bob Plumb’s green fees.
The Rotary Club of Coronado is pursuing a matching grant that will fund computers for an existing computer lab in Swaziland. With 40% of the population under the age of fourteen either Swaziland’s social security is actuarially sound, or they’re in big trouble. We think it’s the latter. Suzanne Popp is the leader of the matching grant and for more information you can go to www.matchgrant.org and the case number is D896.
